Anantnag (Islamabad) is 55 Kms from Srinagar city in South Kashmir situated in the

foot of Mattan Carava. Famous Mughal Governor Islam Khan had constructed a

beautiful garden during his rule for the purpose to gift it to the king Aurangzeb Alamgir in

middle of 17th century. The town called Islamabad related to the name of Islam Khan.

The name of this town was later on changed by Maharaja Gulab Singh as Anantnag.

The name Anantnag was derived from two Hindi words “Anant” and “nag” which means

numerous springs. The town has number of temples and springs out of which Andernag

has a religious importance and Malaknag has Phosphorous contents in the water. Hindus

worship these springs and temples with great faith. There is shrine of great saint Hardi

Reshi known as Reshi Mole. This is one of the old towns of Kashmir with great historic

and religious importance. This town is also district headquarter. Infrastructure with regard

to Health, agriculture, horticulture, games, drinking water, roads etc. is available in the town.

The Handicrafts of town Anantnag (Islamabad) are Gabazari, woodwork, Kangri, and

shawl bafi are famous in the India. This town has most importance in the changing scenario

of the State of J&K. The people of the town are cultured, civilized and politically conscious.
